Your interview with him was my first experience of him. He made an immediate impression and I’m very sorry to hear this news. But somehow his encouraging attitude continues to encourage me, even though my interaction with him was just a sentence or two in a comment section.
Maybe we can try to keep him alive, in a sense, by trying to be more like him.
Loved the interview and thank you for writing and sharing these memories. Gabe was always positive and kind and I am very grateful to have known him. Your post and the many others remind us to value people in our lives every day.
Dave Eggers has written a beautiful tribute on McSweeneys and has invited people to share their memories.
Really loved the conversation you two recorded. This is a beautiful tribute. I only interacted with Gabe briefly on Substack, but he always came across as kind and genuine. What a spirit. Thank you for sharing more about him and his work. 🖤
I didn’t know him at all but have been a reader for a long time and somehow am having the “but he was just here” reaction to this news. What a warm presence in a chilly corner of the world.
People pass away daily. Good people, with special attributes experienced only by those obscure folks who knew them or if they existed in the public eye, known for and remembered by their works or the marks they made. Just being remembered is awesome. But to be remembered AND have those attributes or what made them special discussed by one who benefited from them so others can also, is truly special. I think wherever he is now... he’d appreciate this and what you shared. I know I do, even though his name is new to me. Once I explore his contributions literary and otherwise, this tribute will probably have a deeper meaning. Thank you for sharing 😉👍
I only had one interaction with Gabe, this past September in the comments section of his Substack. In that needle-point sized moment, he made me feel boosted, just as you describe here.

Thank you for writing this.
Thank you!
I followed Gabe on Twitter (mutual friend) and always enjoyed his posts and personality. Very sad to lose him so young.

Thank you for alerting me to that
Sharing ways for us to remember just like you and many others are, thank you.

Wishing we could've had many more.
