I write a lot of satire and I think the term is widely misused and misunderstood. Satire doesn't necessarily mean "funny," though funny can help the medicine go down. I think it's more useful to think of satire as like looking through a funhouse mirror, with reflections and refractions that can be silly, funny, absurd, horrifying, etc.
Hemingway said satire is the lowest style. But he had it wrong. Style is satire.
