Good stuff. But the real big $$ is in ghostwriting nonfiction books. I've been doing that for 16 years, and it's a terrific way to be a professional writer.
Thanks for writing this! A lot of it I’ve heard in one form or another but I still doubt myself so it’s always good to see it written down again. As a non-MFA person I appreciated your take on that. Reiterating the reasons why you might or might not want to pursue that route was helpful.
This was wonderful, thank you! I have a question: is it possible to publish under a pseudonym or pen name? I was curious if this is something you can do from the beginning or if the self-promotion required makes it impractical.
Thank you! That's an interesting question. I suppose there really multiple types of pen names. I know a fair number of authors who do a version of their name as their author name --for example using a middle name as a last name (or else adding a middle name when they usually only use first and last).
I'm guessing you mean a true anonymous pen name. I don't have any experience there, but I don't think there's any problem with it if you do it from the beginning as you say. If you always publish with that name and you create a second twitter account, etc. for that handle. I've known a couple authors who've done that for various reasons.
