Over and over again, the story of AI is so far not the story of AI improving to the human standard so much as the human standard having been lowered over the course of the last decade or two to the point that what AI can produce is close enough.

Two things here - one is that I wonder how the other entrants from that area are feeling right now. And secondly, when I did my PhD, every single source I used for my exegesis had to be checked - by me - and no doubt my examiners also checked many of them. But the push to publish in academia is probably driving this - people trying to hang onto their jobs. Academia itself maybe needs to have a good look at what it expects of research output.
